Rusty Polsgrove is a Program Manager for Live Well Springfield Coalition at the Public Health Institute of Western Massachusetts. Through their role at PHIWM, Rusty supports the Live Well Springfield Coalition, advancing community-led work at the intersection of housing, environmental justice, and health equity.
Rusty began their organizing career at Make-It Springfield, where they served as a studio manager and instructor, teaching local residents skills such as sewing, 3D printing, woodworking, and bicycle repair. This work highlighted the importance of shared spaces and access to resources as catalysts for creativity, self-sufficiency, and community connection. Building on this foundation, Rusty has continued to center community voice and co-creation in their work across organizing and advocacy spaces.
Prior to joining PHIWM, Rusty served as Environmental Justice Organizer and Associate Director at Arise for Social Justice, where they expanded environmental programming to include state-level advocacy, municipal partnerships, regional coalition work, and a yearly internship program for emerging leaders. They also served on the State Commission for Clean Energy Infrastructure, where they advocated for cumulative impacts assessments and early, meaningful community engagement in energy development.
Rusty is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where they earned a Bachelor’s degree in Community Development and Civic Engagement in May 2024. Rusty serves on the Conservation Law Foundation MA State Advisory Board.
Outside of work, Rusty is a passionate supporter of makerspaces and enjoys building creative, community-centered environments.
